Shopify India — Real Monthly Cost in Rupees
Shopify's India pricing (April 2025) starts at ₹1,994/month for Basic, ₹7,447 for Shopify, and ₹29,974 for Advanced. Add 2% transaction fee if you use Razorpay/PayU instead of Shopify Payments. For a store doing 500 orders × ₹1,500 average value = ₹15,000/month in transaction fees alone. That math changes the picture quickly as you scale.
WooCommerce India — Total Cost of Ownership
WooCommerce itself is free, but realistic India costs: hosting (₹500–₹2,000/month on Hostinger/Cloudways), domain (₹800/year), SSL (free with Cloudflare), premium theme (₹3,000–₹8,000 one-time), Razorpay/PayU plugin (free), GST plugin (₹2,000–₹5,000/year). Total: ₹500–₹2,000/month plus one-time setup of ₹15,000–₹50,000 if you hire a developer.
Razorpay & UPI Support
Both platforms support Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree and Instamojo natively or via official plugins. UPI works through these gateways. Shopify Payments is not yet fully live in India, which means most Shopify India stores pay the 2% transaction fee. WooCommerce sidesteps this entirely.
GST Invoicing — Where WooCommerce Wins
Indian GST requires HSN codes, CGST/SGST/IGST split based on customer state, and sequential invoice numbering. WooCommerce GST plugins (like GST for WooCommerce) handle all of this with full customisation. Shopify needs third-party apps (₹500–₹2,000/month extra) and still has limitations on tax invoice formatting. For B2B sellers with strict GSTR-1 filing needs, WooCommerce is usually the safer bet — or generate invoices separately with our free GST invoice generator.
Scalability for Indian Stores
Shopify scales smoothly up to lakhs of orders/month — but the cost climbs (Plus plan starts at $2,300/month). WooCommerce scales as far as your hosting allows; with managed hosting (Cloudways, Kinsta) you can handle Big Billion Day-level traffic for a fraction of Shopify Plus pricing.
Our Take for Indian Founders
Pre-revenue or first 100 orders → start on Shopify, validate fast. 200+ orders/month and growing → move to WooCommerce or a custom build. Always-on, mission-critical or marketplace model → consider custom Laravel/Next.js — see our eCommerce cost calculator for a tailored estimate.
