Tally vs custom billing software: which does your business need?
By the Nexta Web Solution team · Updated
The short answer
Keep TallyPrime for accounting, GST returns and anything your CA needs; it is the standard in India for good reason. Consider custom billing software when your billing has rules Tally handles awkwardly (scheme discounts, weight-based pricing, customer-wise rates), when many counters or field staff bill on phones, or when billing must connect to your app, website or WhatsApp. Most growing businesses end up with both: a custom front end for billing that syncs every invoice into Tally.
Side by side
| TallyPrime | Custom billing software | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Silver ₹22,500 + GST (single user) or Gold ₹67,500 + GST (multi-user), perpetual; or rental from ₹750/month | From ₹1,50,000 + GST for a focused first version |
| Yearly cost | TSS renewal: Silver ₹4,500 + GST, Gold ₹13,500 + GST | Hosting and a support contract |
| Accounting and GST returns | Excellent; CAs know it | Not its job; syncs to Tally or your accountant |
| Your own pricing rules | Possible with customisation (TDL), limited | Built exactly to your rules |
| Billing on mobile / many counters | Desktop-first; remote access options | Web and mobile by design |
| Connect to website, app, WhatsApp | Through connectors or TDL | Native |
| Time to start | Same day | Weeks, after scoping |
Tally prices are from Tally Solutions’ published pricing (checked October 2026).
Tally alone is enough when
- You bill from one or two computers in the office.
- Your prices are a simple rate list with GST.
- Your CA already works in Tally and you are happy with the reports.
- Speed of setup matters more than a perfect fit.
Custom billing earns its cost when
- Salespeople or delivery staff need to bill on phones in the field.
- Pricing follows slabs, schemes, weights or customer-specific contracts.
- Several branches must see stock and bills in real time.
- Customers should get bills and payment links on WhatsApp automatically.
- Billing is part of a bigger flow: orders from an app or website, dispatch, collections.
The common answer: both, connected
We usually recommend keeping Tally as the book of accounts and building a lean billing or order app around your process. Invoices, receipts and stock movements flow into Tally automatically, so your accountant’s work does not change.
Scoping starts with a ₹24,999 + GST discovery sprint, credited to the build. See billing software development.
