Website down? Find the cause in five minutes

The error on the screen tells you a lot. Here is how to read it, who to call, and what to check before you panic.

Do these first, right now

  1. 1Check whether it is down for everyone: open it on mobile data, not your office Wi-Fi.
  2. 2Write down the exact error: “This site can’t be reached”, 500, 503, “Error establishing a database connection” or a certificate warning.
  3. 3Log in to your hosting panel and check for a suspension notice, expired plan or resource limits.
  4. 4Check your domain’s expiry date. Expired domains are a very common cause.

What the common errors mean

“Site can’t be reached” usually means a domain or DNS problem: expired domain, changed nameservers or a DNS record pointing to the wrong server. A 500 error is a code or configuration fault, often after a plugin update. A 503 or a slow timeout is the server overloaded or hitting limits. “Error establishing a database connection” means the database is down or the password changed. A certificate warning means SSL expired or does not cover that address.

Signs you may be seeing

  • Browser says the site can’t be reached
  • 500 Internal Server Error after an update
  • 503 Service Unavailable or very slow timeouts
  • “Error establishing a database connection”
  • “Your connection is not private” certificate warning
  • Hosting account shows suspended

The usual causes

Expired domain or hosting

Renewal emails went to an old address or a card expired. The single most common cause we see.

A bad update

A plugin, theme or PHP version change that breaks the site with a 500 error.

Server limits or outages

Traffic spikes, a runaway script, or the host’s own outage.

Fix it yourself: step by step

If you have access and some confidence, you can try these. Stop if anything looks unfamiliar; a wrong step can make it worse.

  1. 1

    Renew anything expired

Check domain, hosting and SSL renewal dates in their dashboards and renew immediately.

  2. 2

    Roll back the last change

If it broke right after an update, restore the last backup from your hosting panel or disable the plugin by renaming its folder over FTP.

  3. 3

    Read the error log

In cPanel, the Errors section or error_log file shows the exact failing file and line.

  4. 4

    Check DNS

Use a DNS lookup tool to confirm your domain points to your current server’s IP address.

  5. 5

Open a ticket with your host

Include the exact error, the time it started and what changed. Hosts move faster with specifics.

What we do

  1. Diagnose fast within office hours, same day

Domain, DNS, SSL, server and application checked in order.

  2. Restore service

Fix the fault, roll back the bad update or restore from backup, and confirm with you.

  3. Find the root cause

Tell you what happened in plain words and what to change.

  4. Monitor

Uptime monitoring with alerts, so the next outage is caught in minutes, not by a customer.

  • Test updates on a staging copy for important sites.
  • Keep a written list of where domain, DNS and hosting are managed.
