Website not showing on Google? Check these in order
If Google does not show your site even when you search its exact name, something is blocking it or Google has not trusted it yet. Most causes take minutes to check.
Do these first, right now
- 1Search
site:yourdomain.comon Google. If nothing appears, the site is not indexed at all. - 2Open your home page, right-click → View source, and search for
noindex. If you find it, that is the problem. - 3Visit
yourdomain.com/robots.txt. If it saysDisallow: /underUser-agent: *, Google is blocked. - 4Check that both
https://andwwwversions open the same site without a certificate warning.

Why sites go missing from Google
There are two kinds of reasons. Technical blocks: a “noindex” left on from development, robots.txt blocking crawlers, broken HTTPS, or the wrong canonical tag. And trust and quality: a brand-new domain with no links, thin or copied pages, many near-duplicate pages, or spam on your domain from an old hack. Search Console tells you which one it is.
Signs you may be seeing
- A site: search returns nothing or only a few pages
- Search Console shows “Discovered – currently not indexed” or “Crawled – currently not indexed”
- Your business shows on Maps but the website does not rank for your name
- Pages were indexed and then disappeared after a redesign
- Search Console reports a manual action
The usual causes
A leftover noindex
WordPress’s “Discourage search engines” setting, or a developer’s noindex tag, stays on after launch.
Redesign without redirects
Old URLs that had rankings now return 404. Google drops them and the new ones start from zero.
Thin, duplicate or junk pages
Hundreds of near-identical pages or old spam URLs make Google crawl less and index less.
Fix it yourself: step by step
If you have access and some confidence, you can try these. Stop if anything looks unfamiliar; a wrong step can make it worse.
- 1
Add the site to Search Console
Verify your domain in Google Search Console. Without it you are guessing.
- 2
Inspect your home page URL
Use URL Inspection. It says whether the page is indexed, and if not, why.
- 3
Remove noindex and robots blocks
In WordPress: Settings → Reading → untick “Discourage search engines”. Fix robots.txt if it blocks everything.
- 4
Submit your sitemap
Add
/sitemap.xmlunder Sitemaps in Search Console. - 5
Check the Pages report
Look at “Why pages aren’t indexed”. Each reason links to example URLs.
- 6
Set up Google Business Profile
For local businesses, a verified profile often appears for your name before the website does.

How to stop it happening again
- Keep Search Console connected and check the Pages report monthly.
- Plan redirects before every redesign or URL change.
- Do not publish many near-identical pages (for example, one per town with the same text).
- Keep the site secure; hacked spam pages hurt the whole domain.
- Get a few genuine links: suppliers, associations, local directories.
See maintenance plans : updates, daily backups, uptime monitoring and change hours every month.
