Website very slow? Find the cause, then fix it
Slow sites lose visitors before the first screen loads, especially on mobile data. The cause is usually one of four things, and you can see which in five minutes.
Do these first, right now
- 1Test your home page on PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev), on the Mobile tab.
- 2Note the LCP (largest contentful paint). Over 2.5 seconds means real users wait too long.
- 3Scroll to “Opportunities” and “Diagnostics”: oversized images and render-blocking scripts are the usual top items.
- 4Test a second, simple page. If it is also slow, suspect hosting; if not, suspect that page’s content.

What actually makes websites slow
In most small-business sites we audit, the cause is one of four: huge images uploaded straight from a phone or camera, too many plugins and page-builder scripts, slow or overloaded shared hosting, and no caching. Fixing the biggest one usually halves load time. Google measures this as Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP and CLS), and it shows in both rankings and enquiries.
Signs you may be seeing
- The page stays white for several seconds on mobile
- PageSpeed mobile score in red, LCP above 2.5 s
- The admin panel is slow too
- Speed drops at certain times of day
- Layout jumps as images or ads load
The usual causes
Oversized images
A 5 MB photo shown at 600 pixels wide. Converting to WebP at the right size often saves most of the page weight.
Plugin and script overload
Sliders, chat widgets, page builders and trackers, each adding scripts to every page.
Weak hosting
Old servers, no caching, a server far from your visitors, or an account hitting its limits.
Fix it yourself: step by step
If you have access and some confidence, you can try these. Stop if anything looks unfamiliar; a wrong step can make it worse.
- 1
Compress and resize images
Resize to the displayed size and convert to WebP. On WordPress, an image optimisation plugin can do existing images in bulk.
- 2
Turn on caching
Use your host’s caching (for example LiteSpeed Cache) or a reputable caching plugin. Test after enabling.
- 3
Remove unused plugins
Deactivate and delete anything you do not need. Test speed after each removal to find the heavy one.
- 4
Lazy-load below-the-fold media
Images and videos further down the page should load only when scrolled to.
- 5
Check the hosting plan
Look at CPU and memory usage in your hosting panel. Constant limits mean the plan is too small.
