Domain expired? How to get it back

When a domain expires, your website and email usually stop together. In most cases you can still renew it, but the cost and the options change the longer you wait.

Do these first, right now

  1. 1Run a WHOIS lookup on your domain to see the expiry date and the registrar.
  2. 2Log in to that registrar’s account and look for a renew or restore option.
  3. 3Cannot log in? Find out who registered it: an old developer or agency often holds the account.
  4. 4Act today. Each stage after expiry is costlier, and eventually the domain is released for anyone to register.

What happens after a domain expires

For most domains there is first a grace period after expiry during which the registrar lets the owner renew, often at the normal price. After that, many registries have a redemption period in which the domain can still be restored, but with a restore fee. Then it is deleted and released to the public. Exact timings vary by extension (.com, .in) and by registrar, so check with yours immediately.

Signs you may be seeing

  • Website shows a parking page or “domain expired” notice
  • Email to and from your domain stopped
  • WHOIS shows an expiry date in the past
  • Renewal reminders went to an old email address

The usual causes

Renewals sent to an old email

The domain was registered with a former employee’s or developer’s address.

Auto-renew failed

Card expired or the payment method was removed.

Registered by someone else

An old developer or agency holds the domain in their account and did not renew.

Fix it yourself: step by step

If you have access and some confidence, you can try these. Stop if anything looks unfamiliar; a wrong step can make it worse.

  1. 1

    Identify the registrar

Use a WHOIS lookup to see the registrar and status (for example “redemptionPeriod”).

  2. 2

    Recover the account

Use the registrar’s password reset. If the account belongs to someone else, contact them in writing.

  3. 3

    Renew or restore

Renew during the grace period, or pay the restore fee during redemption.

  4. 4

    Turn on auto-renew

Use a valid card and your own email. Renew for several years if the price is right.

  5. 5

    Check DNS after renewal

Make sure nameservers and records still point to your hosting and email.

What we do

  3. Renew or restore

Complete renewal or restoration and fix DNS so the site and email come back.

  4. If it was lost

Backorder the domain, contact the new holder, or move you to a new domain with redirects and minimal disruption.

How to stop it happening again

  • Register domains in your own name and email, never an agency’s.
  • Turn on auto-renew and renew for multiple years.
  • Keep at least two people on the registrar account, with two-factor login.
  • Keep domain, hosting and email renewal dates in one calendar.
  • Use a reputable registrar that sends reminders well before expiry.

Usually yes, during the grace period and, at higher cost, the redemption period. Check with your registrar immediately.

Only by agreement with the new holder, or through a dispute process if they are clearly abusing your trademark. Otherwise you may need a new domain.

If hosting is still active and DNS is unchanged, yes, usually within hours as DNS updates.

Email depends on the domain’s DNS records. When the domain stops resolving, email stops too.

A WHOIS lookup shows the registrar and dates. Owner details are often hidden for privacy, but the registrar can help a verified owner.

No. It should be in your own account. See our website handover checklist.
