How to start a digital marketing agency in India, even without a team
By the Nexta Web Solution partner team · Updated
The short answer
To start a digital marketing agency in India, pick a small set of services local businesses already pay for (websites, Google listings, social media, ads), choose a city or niche, register as a sole proprietor with a free Udyam certificate, set clear packages, and win your first clients from people you know. You do not need to code: a white-label partner such as Nexta can deliver the work under your brand while you handle sales.
What a small agency actually sells
Forget the long service menus on big agency websites. A shop, clinic, coaching centre or builder in an Indian town usually wants a handful of things, and they want them explained in plain words:
- A website that looks professional on a phone and has a WhatsApp button.
- A Google Business Profile that shows up on Maps with photos, timings and reviews.
- Social media posts every week on Facebook and Instagram, so the page does not look dead.
- Ads on Google or Meta when they want enquiries quickly, for an admission season or a sale.
- Someone to call when the site breaks, the domain expires or an offer needs to go live.
Start with three or four of these. Websites bring the first conversation, and the monthly services (SEO, social media, ads management, maintenance) turn one client into income that repeats.
Three ways to run an agency: build, hire or white-label
The biggest decision is who does the actual work. Each route has a different cost and risk.
| Do it yourself | Hire a team | White-label partner | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Money needed to start | Laptop and software | Salaries, office, tools | Almost none |
| Skills you need | Design, coding, SEO, ads | Hiring and managing people | Selling and client handling |
| How many clients you can serve | As many as your hours allow | As many as the team allows | Not limited by your own time |
| Risk in a slow month | Low | High: salaries are fixed | Low: you pay only per order |
| Best for | Skilled freelancers | Owners with capital and steady demand | Beginners and people with a network |
Many successful agencies combine routes: the founder sells and manages clients, a white-label partner handles delivery, and staff are hired only once there is steady monthly revenue to pay them.
Step-by-step: from idea to first paying client
- 1Pick your market. One city or district, or one type of business (clinics, schools, real estate, restaurants). A focus makes your pitch sharper and your samples more relevant.
- 2Choose a name. Check that the .in or .com domain is free and that no well-known company in your field uses the same name.
- 3Register simply. A sole proprietorship needs no separate incorporation. Get a free Udyam (MSME) certificate online with your Aadhaar.
- 4Open a current account in the business name so client payments stay separate from your personal money.
- 5Set up your own presence: a clean website, a Google Business Profile, WhatsApp Business with a catalogue, and an Instagram page with sample work.
- 6Write your packages. Three website packages and one or two monthly plans are enough. Each needs a clear list of what is included.
- 7Win three clients from your network. Relatives, friends and local shopkeepers who already trust you.
- 8Deliver well and ask for a review. Then offer each client a monthly service: SEO, social media or maintenance.
Registration, GST and paperwork
You can start as an individual. These are the pieces most new agencies deal with in the first year:
- Udyam registration: free, online and paperless on the government portal. It helps with opening a current account and with some bank schemes.
- GST: registration becomes mandatory when your yearly turnover from services crosses ₹20 lakh in most states (₹10 lakh in a few special category states). You can register earlier by choice, which some business clients prefer because they can claim input tax credit.
- Invoices: issue a proper invoice for every payment, with your name, address, the service and the amount. Add GST only if you are registered.
- Professional tax: some states, including West Bengal, levy it on businesses and professionals. Check your state.
- Income tax: agency income is business income and goes in your yearly return. A CA can tell you whether presumptive taxation suits you.
How much it costs to start
With the white-label route, starting costs are small and mostly things you may already have.
| Item | Typical cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Phone and laptop | Already owned by most people | A phone is enough for the first few months |
| Domain and business email | A few hundred to a couple of thousand rupees a year | Pick a .in or .com that matches your name |
| Your own website | Low if you build it through your partner | It is your best sample, so make it good |
| Udyam and GST registration | Free on the government portals | Pay only if you use a consultant |
| Visiting cards and a printed brochure | A small one-time spend | Useful for walking into local shops |
| Ads for your own agency | Optional | Most early clients come from referrals, not ads |
How to price your packages
New agencies usually underprice. Price on the value to the client, not on your hours, and always write down what the price includes.
As an example from our partner price list: a 5-page business website sold at a suggested ₹24,999 leaves a partner about ₹20,000. A monthly SEO client at ₹24,999 leaves about ₹20,000 every month the client stays. A landing page for an admission or sale campaign at ₹12,999 leaves about ₹10,500.
- Take a 50% advance before work starts and the balance before the site goes live.
- Sell monthly services with a three-month minimum, so results have time to show.
- Offer a small discount for paying a year of maintenance upfront.
- Never compete only on price. A clear scope and fast replies win more clients than the lowest quote.
Finding your first ten clients
The first clients almost always come from trust, not advertising. Practical places to start:
- Your own contacts. Make a list of 50 people who run a business or work in one. Message them individually, not as a broadcast.
- Google Maps. Search a category in your town, such as "dental clinic in Bardhaman". Businesses without a website button, with few photos or with old reviews are your prospects.
- CAs and tax consultants. They talk to dozens of business owners every month. Offer them a referral share.
- A free audit. Run a business's website through our free website audit tool and share the report on WhatsApp with three simple fixes.
- Your WhatsApp status. Post finished work and short tips every few days. Business owners in your contacts will ask.
Mistakes that sink new agencies
- Selling everything to everyone instead of a few services done well.
- Starting work without a written scope and an advance payment.
- Registering the client's domain in the agency's name. The client should own it; see our website handover checklist.
- Promising "first page on Google in a week". Nobody can guarantee rankings.
- Ignoring follow-up. Most sales close on the second or third conversation.
- Spending months on a logo and a perfect website before talking to a single client.
