Side business ideas for salaried employees in India, and how to do it safely
By the Nexta Web Solution partner team · Updated
The short answer
Good side businesses for salaried employees in India are ones you can run in evenings and on weekends without stock or staff: reselling websites, SEO and social media management to local businesses, content writing, online store setup and website maintenance. Before starting, read your employment contract for outside-work and conflict-of-interest clauses, keep the side work fully separate from your job, and declare the income in your tax return.
Is a side business legal for salaried employees?
In India there is no single law that stops a private-sector employee from running a business outside working hours. What matters is your employment contract, your company's policies and, for some jobs, specific service rules.
- Private-sector employees: many contracts contain an exclusivity or "no outside employment" clause, confidentiality terms and rules on intellectual property. Courts in India have generally upheld restrictions that apply while you are employed.
- Government employees: central and state conduct rules generally do not allow private trade or business without prior permission from the government.
- Conflict of interest: selling to your employer's clients, competing with your employer or using company time, laptops or data can lead to dismissal even where a side business is otherwise allowed.
Checklist before you start
- Read your offer letter, contract and HR policy for words like "exclusive", "outside employment", "moonlighting", "conflict of interest" and "intellectual property".
- If permission is required, ask for it in writing and keep the reply.
- Do not sell to your employer, its clients or its competitors.
- Never use office hours, office devices, email or data for the side business.
- Use a separate phone number or WhatsApp Business account for clients.
- Choose work that someone else can deliver, so a busy week at your job does not let a client down.
Side business ideas that fit around a job
The best side businesses for working people need little time during office hours and do not need you to be physically present.
| Idea | Time a week | Income type | Why it suits a job holder |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reselling websites to local businesses | 4 to 8 hours | One-time, plus renewals | Partner builds it; you sell on weekends |
| Monthly SEO and Google listing management | 2 to 5 hours | Monthly | Recurring income from a few clients |
| Social media management for shops | 3 to 6 hours | Monthly | Designs from a partner, you handle the client |
| Online store setup for retailers | 4 to 8 hours per project | One-time, plus maintenance | Higher value per sale |
| Content writing | 5 to 10 hours | Per article or monthly | Can be done late at night |
| Website maintenance plans | 1 to 2 hours | Yearly | Delivered by a partner, renewals repeat |
How side business income is taxed
Income from a side business is taxed as business income and added to your salary income for the year. Your employer's TDS covers only your salary, so you need to account for the rest yourself.
- Return form: with business income you generally file ITR-3, or ITR-4 if you are eligible for and choose presumptive taxation. A CA can tell you which suits you.
- Advance tax: if your total tax due after TDS is more than ₹10,000 in a year, advance tax instalments may apply.
- Records: keep invoices for every sale and receipts for every business expense, such as partner costs, domains and travel.
- GST: registration is needed once service turnover crosses the threshold, ₹20 lakh in most states.
A realistic weekly plan
About six to eight hours a week is enough to run a small digital services business alongside a job:
| When | What | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Two weekday evenings | Follow up with prospects on WhatsApp, reply to clients | 1 hour each |
| Saturday morning | Meet or call two or three local businesses | 2 to 3 hours |
| Sunday | Review work from your partner, send proposals, plan the week | 2 hours |
Keep weekday office hours completely free of side work. Clients who know your timings respect them.
